Memories for a Lifetime

Not every angler gets the opportunity to fish Alaska during his or her lifetime. The ones who have never seem to tire of reminiscing about it; the ones who haven’t never tire of dreaming about it. A brotherhood of restless anglers spans the globe, united in their dreams of the Greatland. A fraternity of anglers-in-waiting, they each sit through long winter months reading articles and looking at photos of that last paradise they were born to fish. This past July, the chance finally came for one family —the chance of a lifetime.

The Herman’s of Terry, Montana—a little outpost situated on the Yellowstone River in the southeast corner of Big Sky country—had long desired to experience the snow-capped peaks and pristine waters of Alaska for themselves. Like many, they had thought about it, put it off, and then thought some more. Finally, they just did it. Tickets were bought and plans were made—and then the real torture began.

“We had almost a year to blow this trip way out of proportion,” said Joey Girard, a Scobey, Montana, native married to the lone Herman daughter, Michelle. “We talked back and forth by e-mail and every other chance we got.” Soon the impending trip was topic number one at all their gatherings. The patriarch of the family, Richard (Rick) Herman and his sons—Rick Allen, Michael, and Ryan—together with Girard, had gotten together for a holiday ice-fishing expedition and could hardly contain themselves. “All we did was talk about the trip,” Michael recalled.

“We all had wanted to come forever it seems like,” Rick Allen explained. “But this trip was really for Dad. He wavered at first, but I think Mom and Michelle insisted he come.”

Once the decision had been made, any hesitation ended. They were coming to fish and very little downtime was scheduled into their trip. In fact, a midnight arrival into Anchorage gave them just under six hours before their floatplane departed for the west side of Cook Inlet and a day of chasing chrome-bright sockeye in the Big River Lakes.
