The Year in Gear

Fish Alaska magazine Editors’ Choice 2002

Immediately after sending our first issue off to print in August 2001, the staff at Fish Alaska sat down and mapped out an editorial calendar for the 2002 fishing season. The first idea that came to mind was to create a gear review for our next issue. The focus of the review was to be instructional. We wanted a column that would not only inform but also educate our readers. Maybe you read the gear review on salmon rods and now know the difference between a mooch, drift, and back-bounce rod. Maybe you learned a little about Permethrin and now know how to use the stuff on your shirts to keep the bugs off. Maybe you bought a stand-up rod and tried some new fighting techniques on big halibut, and maybe you tried some new monofilament lines and realized that line stretch does make a difference. We hope we made you better anglers.

Without exception, the new fishing tackle for this year was unique. From Lamiglas’ titanium rods and Simms’ five layer guide-weight Gore-Tex waders to Cape Fear’s hexagonal stand-up rods and Rogue Rods’ new graphite handles: we were in “hog-heaven” deciding how to get this stuff on the water.

We contacted professional guides and anglers across all levels of expertise and gave them stuff to use. The telephone calls prospecting for new guinea-anglers were a treat, as most responded with an eerie similarity. “Now, let me get this straight, you want me to use a brand new Sage XP, with a Ross Reel, and then let you know what I think? No problem!” We encountered reviews from experts that liked this and disliked that and accumulated reports from first timers who had never used quality equipment before. Then we tried to put it all together in an enjoyable format for you.

Our complete Editor's Choice Gear Review is available in the October, 2002 issue.  Back issues available.
