Publisher's Note

Exceeding Expectations

In this month’s column, we’d like to recognize some outstanding individuals that have gone above and beyond the call of duty in their profession, first of whom is Rich Johnson of Purnell Photography, a contributing photographer for Fish Alaska magazine and the man responsible for our monthly fly-tying column.

In our September issue, we ran into a snag and did not have the necessary slides and text to complete the department. Rich went out of his way and produced a fly for us at the last minute. This is not unusual for Rich, who routinely exceeds our highest expectations, but his schedule is hectic at this time of the year and he came through for us with flying colors. As if this wasn’t enough, Rich then produced prototype salmon shark flies for us to use in Cordova, which proved successful in catching a salmon shark on the fly. We are truly thankful for Rich’s efforts.

A second individual worthy of recognition is Jennie Lou Bender, a flight attendant for ERA Aviation. Through all the flights we’ve taken while covering fishing stories around Alaska, we have never seen a flight attendant who loves her job to this degree and is always happy and smiling. Keep up the great work, Jennie.

We just recently completed a week long trip to Kodiak. In total, 13 people were there on varying schedules covering a wide range of fishing opportunities on the Emerald Isle. We’d like to recognize Pam Foreman, executive director of the Kodiak Island Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, for orchestrating all the arrangements and making it possible for us to fluidly experience some of the incredible fishing on Kodiak. Her help was crucial to putting such a great trip together.

Finally, we’d like to recognize Karen Anderson, the newest addition to the Fish Alaska sales team. Karen has proven that she will be a great member of the team, and her hard work and consistent performance has already enabled her to close two new contracts. Hats off to Karen.

It’s the people of Alaska, as well as the exceptional fishing, that makes a trip here special. We hope you can visit and experience both on an upcoming trip.

See you fishing!
