Testing equipment is typically something less than a chore, particularly since the laboratory in this case is the Alaska outdoors. However, if gear for big fish is what you're after, items that will not only handle a hot 40-pound king but will also stand up to the worst of the elements, Alaska makes the ideal proving ground. Stuff that succeeds up here will make it just about anywhere else.
But that also means plenty of things won't work, and while our testers certainly enjoyed discovering a new Okuma reel that took two weeks' beating and kept on ticking, that Simms Women's Wading Jacket that still hasn't let a drop of moisture in, or the Arctic SnoSuit that's opened up a whole new season of activities, there are also the broken rods, the long days in leaky waders, the wading boots with the missing felt.
Our concern, though, is the best, and that's what we've listed here-from the Outdoor Research Men's Furio Jacket to the Cortland Precision Platinum fly line, the results of our testing throughout the year follow, arranged in three simple categories. There are our gold-medal favorites, items at the top of the angling-equipment food chain, chosen without regard to retail price. Secondly, there's our silver-medal category, for those items that performed exceptionally under Alaska's notoriously raw conditions, but that come with an affordable price tag. Last but not least, you'll find our "Field Favorites," those items that we found indispensable on our best excursions of the year.

Lamiglas Certified Pro X 96 MC Steelhead Casting Rod $290 www.gloomis.com
A longtime Fish Alaska favorite, the Certified Pro Salmon & Steelhead rods from Lamiglas are again represented in our editors' awards list, this time with the X 96 MC, a 9-foot, 6-inch moderate- to fast-action casting rod that's specifically tuned to chasing Alaska's steelhead. "For an all-around, "do-anything" steelhead rod, the Certified Pro X 96 MC is the one to own," says guide and Fish Alaska contributing editor Mark Glassmaker. "It has enough backbone to pull big Situk fish out of the wood, while still having a light enough tip to drift even a one- or two-BB slinky.ÊI like this versatility since conditions are always changing when fishing for steelhead. Having a rod that can change with the conditions really pays off."
GOLD
Okuma Guide Select
Spinning Rod GS-S-662M $89.99 www.okumafishingteam.com
Designed specifically for the North American fishing guide, men and women who obviously take their fishing seriously, the Okuma Guide Select spinning rods are the culmination of countless hours of research and development. We like the GS-S-662M best, a 7-foot, two-piece rod rated for 8- to 17-pound-test. Its medium action makes it a pleasure to fish all day, while the IM-8 graphite blanks-reinforced in construction by Okuma's Evo Graph weave-provide enough power to handle Alaska's feistiest silvers.
GOLD
Orvis Helios 906-4
Fly Rod $775 www.orvis.com
If you enjoy fishing both big rivers, like the Naknek and Kvichak, one day and smaller creeks, such as Moraine or Funnel, the next, this rod can do it for you. The Helios, available for freshwater and saltwater application, is lightweight, but it holds lots of power and is ultimately manageable, meaning a proficient caster can produce tight loops and super-accurate casts, even at a distance. The rods are available in mid-flex and tip-flex, depending on the power an angler desires. If you're looking for a superior rod that casts great and garners some envy on the stream, give the Helios a try.
SILVER
St. Croix Legend Elite FLY RODS $440 www.stcroixrods.com
The Legend Elite line of fly rods from St. Croix was redesigned in 2008 and the results are good. Combining performance features with cosmetic upgrades produces a sharp wand to wave at the piscatorial legion. The company boasts the addition of SCVI graphite in the lower portion of the rod for added power and Fish Alaska magazine testers can attest to the result when fighting double-digit weight fish. The series comes in freshwater options from 3- through 10-weight and saltwater options from 6-to 12-weight.
SILVER
Cortland
Big Sky
9-foot, 6-weight FLY ROD $229.95 www.cortlandline.com
This rod offers a range of applications from throwing dries to drifting nymphs to swinging streamers. Its fast action enables the caster to generate the speed needed to punch big flies through the wind. The cork handle is quite comfortable and at under 4 oz., it's not a stretch to cast this rod all day. The Big Sky series comes in a range of models from 4- to 12-weight, each made specific for a range of angling challenges.
SILVER
Ross Worldwide Essence Fly Rod $219 www.rossreels.com
You can bet that anything that comes from Ross will be of quality and this rod is certainly no exception. We thoroughly enjoyed the 9', 6-weight model irrespective of price, and when you consider price to performance, this is a real steal. The 4-piece rod comes standard with sock and tube, and the product line ranges from 3- to 11-weight rods. Using it exclusively in trout applications, it performed well in casting dries and swinging leech patterns.
FRESHWATER REELS
GOLD
Abel Super 12W
Spey Reel $850 www.abelreels.com
The Abel Super 12W is designed for the ever-growing contingent of Spey rod enthusiasts who live in and visit the waters of coastal British Columbia and Alaska. The Super 12W is precision-machined and anodized against saltwater corrosion using Abel's proprietary metallurgical process. They're made with a fully caged frame for increased durability and to eliminate the possibility of an ultra-thin running line weaving its way between the frame and spool. The reels, which are great for saltwater applications as well, are available in standard high-gloss Black Coral or non-reflective matte black finishes.
SILVER
Albright GPX 5/6
FLY REEL $99.99 www.albrighttackle.com
This large arbor, aluminum, disc-drag fly reel has the power to stop a charging chum salmon that's bound for the sea. The large arbor allows for quick line pick-up, which is crucial when fighting salmon that routinely make sizzling 50-yard runs. It is available in right and left hand models. We found that this drag had enough resistance to stop large fish, but was also sensitive enough to use in lighter tippet scenarios for trout. That makes this a nice addition to the traveling angler's arsenal, as one can buy an extra spool and fish salmon and trout with the same reel. At this price, this reel is a bargain.
SILVER
Ardent XS1000
Casting Reel $249.99 www.ardentoutdoors.com
This reel was a field favorite among testers as it was easy to cast with minimal backlash. Combined with an Airrus casting rod, the combo was deadly for casting spinners to coho and drifting beads to trout. A ventilated aluminum spool and magnesium side plates make this a light reel, which allows the angler to balance the system with a light rod. We found it possible to make extra-long casts and could cover seams that other anglers were unable to reach.
SILVER
Lamson Konic 2
Fly Reel $129
www.waterworks-lamson.com
If we did not know this was Lamson's most affordable reel, we would have thought otherwise. A smooth drag system makes fighting fish really nice. The reel is light-weight, which provides better balance on today's high-tech, feather light rods.
SILVER
Ardent S400M Spinning Reel $149.99 www.ardentoutdoors.com
We put this reel to the test with four different gear testers over the span of two months on the Kenai River catching rainbow trout and Dolly Varden. All testers enjoyed the effortless performance while making a range of long and short casts. Additionally, the drag proved smooth and consistent, which enabled them to land hot fish up to 7 pounds.
SILVER
Galvan R-6 FLY REEL $260 www.galvanflyreels.com
The Rush series of reels has been designed by Galvan to fit the mid-range market, but includes some of the features found in their higher-end Torque line. We found the reel to be reliable and the drag smooth and even. The Rush series is available in 3- to 12-weight models.
SILVER
Solitude SR4 FLY REEL $270 www.solitudereels.com
The 8/9-weight reel is well equipped to handle salmon and steelhead, as well as trophy rainbow trout and smaller saltwater quarry. The reel comes standard with a corrosion-proof finish, which helps reduce nicking and scratching and provides extra protection in the saltwater. The Solitude line is available in three color and four size options.
SILVER
Wright McGill Sabalos Spinning reel $109.99 www.wright-mcgill.com
From the sleek silver body to the cobalt blue lower spool and fish symbol, this reel just feels like it would catch fish. And to no surprise at Fish Alaska, it really performed well in making mid to long-range casts and hooking and fighting 3- to 8-pound fish in heavy current. The series has 4 models and we tested the 3500, the second largest in the line. This is a great choice for an angler who prefers to spin fish for salmon and large trout, and as a sealed system, it is apparently impervious to saltwater. So that makes this a good reel to drift beads to trout or throw spinners to silvers in the salt.

GOLD
TICA Alaska Big Game
halibut rod $87 www.ticaamerica.com

This rod combines several unique features that make it a hit for halibut. The grip is formed to fit the palm and finger and reduces fatigue when working big baits and ultimately fighting big fish. It's also short and light, which allows an angler to use more of the big muscles to move big fish. Available in 50- to 100-pound test models in 4'6", 5' and 5'6" lengths.
GOLD
Seeker SS660H $351 www.seekerrods.com
Seeker's rods are well known in Alaska for handling the rigors of big bottomfish. This rod follows in the same footsteps. We used the rod to jig for bottomfish in the Gulf of Alaska and easily subdued 100-plus-pound halibut and 50-pound lingcod in addition to the occasional 20-pound yelloweye rockfish. We especially liked the soft rod tip, which enabled us to more easily sense the slightest attack on the hardware dancing 300 feet below.
SILVER
Okuma Cedros
Jigging rod $99.99 www.okumafishingteam.com

Fish Alaska magazine was suitably impressed with this economical, fun-to-use jigging rod from Okuma. We tested the CJ-C-601MH, which is a 6', one-piece, 50- to 100-pound line-class rod. It is light, responsive and suitable for Alaska's bottom fish. We especially liked the molded grip and the long handle for extra leverage and found that we could jig all day with limited fatigue.

Penn Torque 300TQ Lever Drag $399.99 www.pennreels.com
Built like a tank, yet endowed with modern features found in the Torque line, allows Penn to continue to position themselves as one of the best saltwater reel manufacturers on the planet. We enjoyed the big crank when jacking robust flatties from the depths.
GOLD
Avet HXW 5/2 $429.99 www.avetreels.com
If you want to winch up bottomfish all day and not spend the evening icing your wrist, then a high quality, large handled, two-speed reel should be in your arsenal. Seriously consider this one. This reel is compact, well-built and powerful, and allowed us to smoothly jig for a wide range of saltwater tasties ranging from 20-pound yelloweye rockfish to triple digit flatfish.
GOLD
Daiwa Saltist
30H Reel $169.95 to $199.95 www.daiwa.com
Silky smooth line drops and rapid retrieves were the signature for this field-tested reel. Packed with 50-pound superline, this reel accompanied with most good jigging sticks will keep the saltwater angler moving through the water column with ease. This product worked well for Fish Alaska staff in bouncing heavy jigs off rock pinnacles for lingcod and in mooching cut plug herring for silver salmon. Its 6.1 to 1 gear ratio really allows the angler to put line back on the reel in a hurry.
SILVER
Okuma Contoura
Conventional Reel $119.99 www.okumafishingteam.com
This trolling reel served us well in pursuing salmon in the saltwater in 2008. Built lightweight and tough, this economical reel picks line up quickly and is comfortable to use with an oversized handle. Okuma's multi-disk carbonite drag system held up to the rigors of fighting hard-charging salmon in the salt. We found this reel also quite adept at plying the depths for bottom fish.
FIELD FAVORITE
TICA Alaskan
Series reel $149 www.ticaamerica.com
This sharp looking level-wind reel is both functional and great looking with a cobalt blue finish and an outline of the state of Alaska on the palming sideplate. This reel was used to troll for silvers in the rivers, as well as lighter duty rockfish action in Prince William Sound, and we enjoyed its performance. The level wind comes with a beefed-up clutch, gearing and drag system, which is just what anglers in the Great Land require.
LINES
GOLD
Ande Monofilament Freshwater $7.49 www.andemonofilament.com
Ande's foray into the freshwater market yields another great line from a long respected monofilament leader. Strong and supple, it casts well and showed the usual abrasion resistance common to Ande line.
GOLD
P-Line
Hydrofloat $12.99 www.p-line.com
So you want to get better at jig or bobber and bait fishing? Try P-Line's Hydrofloat for better presentations and reduced line drag. It's a Spectra-based line that is endowed with a thermal fused coating. This gives the line more substance, which helps in mending during the drift, and because it is Spectra based, it has very little stretch, which helps in hook sets. We appreciated this feature as it allowed us to make longer drifts while jig fishing for silvers.
SILVER
Cortland Precision
Platinum Floating Line $65 www.cortlandline.com
We tested the 6-weight model and were duly impressed with its performance in a wide range of casting conditions. Its longer head allows an angler to make short, accurate casts, but also allows the fisherman to stretch out and cover more water. The extended rear taper came in handy for roll casting while we found the overall configuration to be productive in casting and mending. Cortland's DuraSlik coating reduces the overall drag of the line in the guides and on the water, which translates to longer casts and effective, drag-free drifts.
SILVER
Maxima Treazure $13.99 www.maxima-lines.com
This co-polymer line was tough and limber, which allowed testers to cast it far while getting accurate feedback from the lure. It showed its abrasion resistance as it was used to drift various offerings to salmon and trout that rested just off the bottom of various rivers. Treazure can be found in 6- to 40-pound-test spools.
FIELD FAVORITE
RIO Gold Fly Line $64.95 www.rioproducts.com
The Rio Gold has been designed to be one of the best all-around floating lines for freshwater fly-fishing. A revolutionary design ensures loop stability during the cast, while the unique taper is front-loaded to efficiently load the rod, even at close ranges. A positive front taper allows perfect presentations of everything from a size 22 Serendipity to a #2 articulated leech. Additionally, the entire line is made with Rio's AgentX undercoat to ensure high floatation and super-smooth performance.

Scientific Anglers
Sharkskin Fly Line $99 www.scientificanglers.com
Instead of a smooth surfaced line, SA introduced a micro-pattern around the entire circumference of the line. A key feature is that the pattern changes the meniscus-force balance that holds all other floating lines at close to a neutral buoyancy. The Sharkskin's micro texture increases the upward meniscus force through the trapping of air in the valleys of the texture. Basically, the line sits higher in the water than other lines, and allows less drag, easier mending, easier roll casting and easier pick-ups. The new lines come in weights 3 through 8.

Vision Hook and Tackle Rain Fish $3.50 www.visionhooksandtackle.com
Like many other soft baits on the market, the Rain Fish looks and acts lifelike, which stimulates predator fish to attack. Bechhold and Sons
Fishcatcher DF-8 flasher $10.99 www.fishcatcher.com
This unique flasher has several innovations that resulted in more salmon landed. Three eyelets on the butt end of the flasher give the angler three choices for bait action, with the fastest action on the outside eyelet. This came in handy when the fish were not biting and a change in action resulted in fish. We also believe that the beveled edges produce a greater flash and attract more fish. Flashers have sure come a long way and this is another example of advances in technology allowing the angler to boat more fish. The flashers come in 12 different colors and we especially liked Super Glow green and chartreuse.

With enough space to fit about 50 pounds of gear, the issue with this vest is paring down your choices so that you are not overburdened. We found ourselves loaded down on the Brooks River this past summer since we needed to bring every type of fly ever presented to a trout in addition to a variety of reels and leaders. This paid dividends in the long run as it allowed the field tester to feel like he was wearing body armor among the bears and it also allowed the anglers to figure out what the finicky trout wanted to eat.
