Destination Special: Summer Trout at Rainbow River Lodge

by Troy Letherman

Much of the prime trout fishing in Alaska revolves around two seasons – early, when fishing is typically a fry- and smolt affair; and late, after the salmon arrive and begin to spawn. This Year in Gear: Our Editors’ Choice Awards

From the out-of-the-box performance and durability of the Gold Awards, rated best of the best over the past year, to our favorite bang-for-the-buck pieces of equipment and on to the gear we just loved to have along in the field, welcome to our 2013 awards issue. Fish Alaska editors and field testers spent the past angling season putting everything from the latest rods to the warmest jackets to work, rain or shine (mostly rain), and here are the results.

New Gear 2013

A new Clackacraft jet boat? Okuma’s Sábalos saltwater fly reel? Or simply a new dual fuel lantern from Coleman? If it’s new and noteworthy – and of interest to those fishing across the Last Frontier – then it’s in here, our report on all the new gear hitting shelves in 2013.

Retailers’ Choice Awards

When it comes to fishing in Alaska, who knows better what sells and why than those who do it for a living? Stop in here and see what the state’s many retailers have to say about the gear their customers favored over the past year.
