Boy do I love rainbow fishing in the fall. The Kenai is one of my favorite fisheries in all of Alaska. We spent a couple days with our friends who own and guide for Alaska Drift Away Fishing and it was epic. You can read about it in the upcoming January issue. There were well over 30 trout and another dozen or so dollies caught by two fly fishing ladies. What fun. Can't wait to go back this month and next.

While spring is hard to beat, just because we've waited so long to put a bend in the rod again, I agree there's nothing like fall in Alaska, particularly for those of us obsessed with trophy trout. Soaked to the bone, freezing like crazy and casting as far as possible, right into the teeth of a sideways rain--wouldn't miss it for the world.

And every fish you catch in a salmon stream is beefed up from said spawn, turning an otherwise easily tamed 18-inch fish into a bruiser on your 5 weight. And if you search out those big bad boys - trout approaching and exceeding 30 inches in places like the Naknek, Kvichak and Kenai rivers - bring the 8 weight and boxes of beads and flesh. Nothing better than the tight line grab from a football shaped rainbow as that giant chunk of articulated flesh swings down and across. Nirvana.

Re: Fall Trout Fishing

Its been a very mild fall in south-central, and daytime highs are still in the 40's. How's the trout fishing going out there? I've been stuck at the desk, so I'm reaching out for somebody to send me some fish eye-candy. I know that those big bruisers must be prowling the middle Kenai still....
