The Talkeetna River
![]() |
The silty Talkeetna is home to runs of all 5 species of Pacific salmon and to some healthy Dolly Varden, rainbow trout and even some grayling. The Talkeetna is accessible by boat, floatplane or hike into the area.
Break-up for the Talkeetna usually is complete by early May. Fly fisherman do well with a light weight rod, streamers and smolt imitating flies early in the fishing season from May to early June.
To find your king or sockeye, plan to be on the river in late June through early July. The chums, pinks and silvers begin to run in peak between August and mid September. While salmon can be fly fished, they also seem to regard spinners and spoons.
