Here it is Salmon Heads! Plenty of Silvers still in the creek. Time to fill your freezers. Limits
Have been increased. Here is a copy of the EO that can also be found on the ADFG website.

Ship Creek Coho Salmon Bag and Possession Limits Increased to Six Fish

(Anchorage) - Effective 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 25, 2017, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is increasing the bag and possession limit for coho salmon, 16 inches or greater in length, to six per day in Ship Creek from its mouth upstream to a cable 100 feet downstream of the Chugach Power Plant dam.

A stream survey conducted on Ship Creek on August 23, 2017, counted over 1,600 coho salmon upstream of the fishery. The escapement above the Chugach Power Plant dam will meet the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery’s coho salmon brood stock goal and allow for some natural spawning in Ship Creek; therefore, it is warranted to increase the coho salmon bag and possession limit in the section open to salmon fishing to allow for increased harvest of surplus hatchery fish.

“With each tide there are still plenty of nice looking coho coming into Ship Creek and since it looks like we are going to meet our hatchery and natural spawning needs, let’s go fishing” said Brittany Blain-Roth, Anchorage Sport Fisheries Assistant Area Manager. Please remember that a foul-hooked or snagged fish, a fish hooked elsewhere than in the mouth, needs to remain in the water and be released immediately. A coho salmon 16 inches or longer that is removed from the water must be retained and becomes part of the bag limit of the person who originally hooked the fish.

For more information, please contact Anchorage Area Management Biologist Jay Baumer at (907) 267-2265, Brittany Blain-Roth at (907) 267-2186, or the Sport Fish Information Center at (907) 267-2218.

A little bit of mud and the patience only a young angler has paid off for this young lady. She was able to land this 17lb King on the incoming tide yesterday. She lost a monster at the bank right before this. She has some fresh salmon fillets headed home with her. Bait behind a spin-n-glo. Fish On!

The king salmon run at Ship Creek located in downtown Anchorage is always an ideal last-minute fishing location when anglers are on the meat hunting mission for the freezer. Reports of the first king salmon run caught on Ship Creek occurred around the 15th of May. Since then, the run has steadily increased with most action occurring an hour to three hours after peak high tide. It is highly recommended to pick up a tide table at a local sporting goods store or Fred Meyers and study the tide charts as water levels change frequently throughout the week. Anglers who have done well are using drift rigs connected to one or two corkies tipped with chartreuse or pink yarn. Bait is also highly effective.  Fan casting Kwikfishes or Mag Lips tipped with herring works well. Another simple strategy anglers prefer is to drift roe under a slip float just above the bottom as anglers can adjust depth quickly as it changes throughout the course of the day. Average size kings caught from Ship Creek are around 20 pounds with a shot at a 40-pounder definitely possible.  Lastly, please use caution when wading in Ship Creek as the tidal mud creates hazards for returning to higher ground as the tides increase or fluctuate during the day. Wearing waders, hip boots, or Extra Tuffs is recommended in case of tripping or falling in the tidal mud.
