After feeding on Salmon eggs for 6 to 8 weeks, that 25″ fish that weighed 6 lbs in June suddenly weighs 12 lbs, and that 30″ fish will often top 15 lbs!
September is also one of the most beautiful times of the year in southwest Alaska as the fireweed and blueberry bushes turn brilliant red, the cottonwoods and alders turn bright yellow & the mountains often have a skiff of snow on them. The Brown Bears are usually very visible as they are working hard for the last salmon to put on extra body fat before hibernation.

Angry Eagle Lodge & Outfitters The greatest salmon run in the world is currently in progress in southwest Alaska. The Alaska Department of Fish & Game has estimated that about 51 million Sockeye (Red) Salmon will leave the Bering and Pacific Oceans during the summer of 2018 to ascend the rivers of the mainland to spawn and die. Sockeye Salmon are considered the primo salmon for eating, be it canned, cooked or smoked. The indigenous peoples of coastal Alaska have for thousands of years taken and preserved vast numbers of Sockeyes during their annual summer spawning runs to feed their families and dog teams. The commercial fishermen will harvest over 20 million of the Sockeyes each year for the canneries and commercial market thereby leaving millions of to enter the lakes and streams for the bears, eagles, indigenous peoples and sport fishermen. The sport fisherman’s limit of Sockeyes is usually 5 per day, which means a couple of days of fishing can provide our clients with 30 or 40 lbs of one of the best eating filets you can find.
Around the first week of July each yeaar, 4 – 6 million Sockeyes enter southwest Alaska’s vast Lake Iliamna from the Bering Sea making their way to the northeast end of the lake where Angry Eagle Lodge is located providing virtually an unlimited number of hookups for our clients through early September. If you have never experienced the awesome Sockeye runs of the Lake Iliamna area, you need to come visit us for one of the greatest spectacles of your life! We are now booking for the summer of 2019 and availability is limited during this popular time of the year, so it is advantageous to book your trip a year in advance to ensure you can have the dates you desire.

Togiak River Lodge Thank you to everyone at the Togiak River Lodge We had the trip of a lifetime catching more huge King Salmon than we could count. Nushagak River Adventures Last clients headed home yesterday afternoon, staff of twelve are now busy preparing equipment, demolishing a kitchen, preparing and wiring a new kitchen, servicing and dry docking boats and motors.

Nushagak River Adventures Angry Eagle Lodge & Outfitters The Alaska Department of Fish & Game has posted their last counts of King Salmon ascending the Nushagak River from the Bering Sea. The sonar counting station is at Portage Creek, just downriver from the braids located about 40 miles up river from the ocean. This has been a good year with 86,987 King Salmon being counted since June 14th. After a disappointing run of 56,961 counted as of July 14, 2017, the King numbers jumped back up to about average on the Nush. Below are numbers of Kings AF&G has counted ascending the Nush as of July 14 the last 7 years at the Portage Creek sonar station:
2018 86,987 The 86,987 Kings counted ascending the Nushagak this year will very probably exceed the sum total of all the other rivers in Alaska where AF&G conducts counts. What that tells us is that if you are thinking about a trip to Alaska for Kings, the Nush is the only place to go for a high probability of catching you limit! Angry Eagle is booking spots for the 2019 King Salmon season on the Nushagak, which runs from about the 2nd week of June thru the 3rd week of July. Needless to say spots are limited and go quickly, if you want to fish for Kings next season now is the time to book your dates! Angry Eagle Lodge & Outfitters The Nushagak River we fish for King Salmon has produced one of the most consistent runs we have seen in many years. While every other river in Alaska that has a King run has been experiencing declining runs the last few years the “Nush” and maintained it’s impressive runs. Since the AF&G Department began counting Salmon at their Portage Creek sonar station, located about 20 miles upriver from Bristol Bay on the Bering Sea, has the count been under 1,000 King Salmon a day and that includes July 8th when “only” 982″ Kings were counted. 1,000 Kings per day provides excellent fishing in the braids north of Portage Creek where we conduct our fishing. As you are only allowed to keep 2 Kings per day, one under 28″ and one over 28″ with an aggregate limit of 4 Kings per year, our anglers generally limit out in two days of fly-outs from the lodge at Lake Iliamna and are able to spend the rest of the week enjoying the great Rainbow, Char, Grayling and Pike fishing the Lake Iliamna area is known for.
The King season will run thru the 3rd week of July & now is the time to be booking your 2019 trip for Kings with Angry Eagle Lodge. As the King run is only about 5 weeks long, booking a year out is the only way you can ensure getting the particular week you are interested in during June and July.
