Best Layering Apparel for Fishing in Alaska
FisheWear Groovy Grayling Leggings
The great feel of FisheWear leggings is what makes giving this award easy. Our female testers have been impressed with all of the designs that have come from founder Linda Leary and her artistic comrades and the Groovy Grayling design is no exception.
Terramar Men’s Thermawool Full Zip Top
We’re big fans of both wool and microfibers and this top combines both fabrics. It’s light, breathable, warm, comfortable and odor-resistant. We believe strongly in layering when doing anything outside in Alaska, and this top was one of our favorite layers in 2016.
Huk Tetra Vest
This vest is lightweight but warm and features Primaloft Silver Insulation mated with windproof, water-resistant, stretch fleece. The vest includes side pockets and a waterproof chest pocket. Huk is also working with Kryptek to make clothing with several of Kryptek’s awesome camo patterns.
Coolibar Women’s Hiking Shirt
This shirt provides UPF 50+ protection from the sun and is lightweight, breathable and wicks moisture. It features ventilation panels under the arms, along the sides and at the back shoulder. The fabric is a polyester/spandex blend that repels stains and water. Our tester liked the overall performance of this shirt.
Woolrich Men’s Merino Wool Base Layer Bottoms
These bottoms are very comfortable to wear all day long. They have served as a favorite layer to stay comfortable and dry when fishing on days when it is below freezing.
White Sierra Women’s Sierra Ridge Stripe Pullover
This moisture-wicking, lightweight pullover includes an oversized turtleneck with adjustable drawstrings, thumb holes and a rounded hem. Our tester found it comfortable and warm.
Woolrich Women’s Pemberton Flannel Shirt
Whether stationed at the fire in camp, hiking through the backcountry to the next stream or just strutting around Anchorage, our tester loved this flannel shirt, available in an assortment of stunning new plaids this year.
Ibex Men’s Indie Full-Zip
Made from Merino wool for uncompromising comfort, this zip up incorporates a natural fiber layer that is perfect for cooling down, warming up, or as an all-purpose layer. With thumbholes for easy layering, this was a favorite from our year’s travels.
Terramar Cloud Nine Scroll Print Scoop & Scroll Bottom
Form meets function in this outstanding midweight top and bottom. The fabric is ultra-soft and features ClimaSense Thermoregulation Technology that automatically adjusts to your body temperature, trapping air to maintain warmth when you’re cool and allowing moisture vapor to escape so you maintain comfort when aerobic activity rises and the surface temperature increases.
