Our tester was impressed at the ruggedness of these garments and stayed dry while surf-casting in the icy northern Pacific. When other anglers headed for the heated cabin while plying the saltwater depths in Southeast during a cold, rainy, late-August day, our tester remained on deck. StormR’s Neoprene Core technology allows them to produce products with an ultra-thin neoprene core combined with durable, water-repellant outer fabrics. The results are warm, stretchable and waterproof garments.
2. Carhartt Women’s Force Equator Jacket

This odor-fighting rain jacket kept us dry on the wettest days this season. Details include FastDry technology that wicks away moisture, fully taped waterproof seams, plus hook-and-loop closures on the cuffs.
3. Woolrich Men’s Classic Waterproof Rain Slicker

The classic and relaxed fit of this waterproof jacket leaves plenty of room for layering as needed on many Alaska summer and fall days. Generous pockets are an added benefit to an outdoorsman.
4. Columbia Sportswear Diamond 890 TurboDown Hooded Down Jacket

This is a hooded winter jacket featuring Columbia’s proprietary 890 TurboDown insulation along with Omni-Heat thermal insulation and their Omni-Heat reflective lining. The jacket packs down really small and is very light in weight, and it has a hood as well, further warding off the chill of cold-weather fishing. This jacket is a great choice for late fall, winter and early spring fishing whether in a boat, a float tube on a lake or wading the upper Kenai. 
5. Outdoor Research Women’s Horizon Jacket

Outdoor Research earns awards from us year after year simply because their quality is top-notch. The Horizon Jacket is nothing short of that standard in a fully waterproof, breathable jacket with taped seams that features TorsoFlo hem-to-pit zippers that vent extra heat on those warm, wet days on the river.
6. ExOfficio BugsAway Sandfly Jacket

The BugsAway Sandfly Jacket, featuring Insect Shield technology, provides packable bug protection and stuffs into its own security zip pocket. Permethrin, the active ingredient in Insect Shield, is invisible, odorless and so tightly bonded to the fabric fibers that it retains effective repellency through the life of the garment. It repels mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers and no-see-ums. Our tester was thankful to find some relief from Alaska’s biting insects.
7. Sierra Designs Men’s All Season Windjacket

Four-way stretch provides extra comfort for a day of freshwater fishing. In a light wind or minor rain, this jacket performs as you need it, providing all the needed mobility for fishing, running your boat, getting camp ready and more.
8. Kryptek Koldo Rain Jacket and Pants

Rugged, waterproof, windproof and lightweight, we were thoroughly impressed when using this rain gear on fishing and hunting trips in 2014. Many technical features are built into the system, the primary being a 3-ply design that keeps the user dry, windproof and warm. The Highlander camo pattern is radical and blends in extremely well with varied terrain.
9.Kast Storm Castle Jacket

This breathable jacket is wind- and water-resistant and makes for a good layer in a wading system. We recommend a light waterproof shell over the top when the weather gets snotty. The jacket is sharp-looking, with green accents on the chest pocket zippers, and is comfortable to wear.
10. Grundéns Balder Rain Jacket & Bib

The Balder Jacket and Bib Pants are packed with innovative features and tailored from heavy-duty PVC material specially developed for oil resistance and excellent cold-weather properties, meaning it not only protected our tester in cold conditions but that it also maintained its flexibility when ice begins to coat the rigging. For wearing comfort and improved performance, Grundéns adds a poly cotton twill backing that features rip-stop technology for maximum tear strength and a water-repellant treatment for added protection. Basically, our review is this is heavy-duty protection for Alaskans who encounter the worst of our weather.
