Avisory Announcement
(Released: July 10, 2020 – Expires: July 13, 2020) CONTACT: Sam Ivey

Little Susitna River Reopens to Limited King Salmon Harvest
(Palmer) – The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is reopening the Little Susitna River to a limited harvest opportunity for the remainder of the king salmon season. Effective 6:00 a.m. Saturday, July 11 through 11:00 p.m. Monday, July 13, 2020, anglers may keep one king salmon per day, 20 inches or greater in length, in the Little Susitna River. The annual limit is restricted to two king salmon, 20 inches or greater in length, and the area open to king salmon harvest is limited to downstream of the weir only. Artificial lures with multiple hooks may be used downstream of the weir per regulation. Waters upstream of the weir to the Parks Highway, remain catch-and-release only for king salmon with only one unbaited, single hook, artificial lure allowed.

The sustainable escapement goal for king salmon on the Little Susitna River is 2,100 – 4,300 fish. As of July 10, 2020, 2,154 king salmon have been counted at the Little Susitna weir. The weir count is considered a minimum count because it is likely additional fish passed the weir undetected from approximately June 13 – June 18 when the weir was flooded. Based on the weir count and a projected escapement of about 2,300 fish it is warranted to allow the sport fishery to proceed by regulation downstream of the weir and for the fishery upstream of the weir to remain catch-and-release only. The estimated harvest of less than 75 fish due to this action will not lower the final escapement below the lower end of the escapement goal if harvest is only allowed downstream of the weir.

“The catch-and-release strategy used from the outset of the season worked well toward meeting our escapement objectives and now it appears there can be some late season opportunity for anglers to harvest a king salmon,” stated Area Management Biologist Sam Ivey. “Even though this is a small opportunity, it is worth it during these unprecedented times, to have the chance to put even just one king salmon in the freezer”.

Salmon Heads, Here is your chance to continue to put some Kings in the freezer. Full throttle and go get ‘em. Fish On!

Deshka River Open to Limited King Salmon Harvest
(Palmer) – The Deshka River king salmon escapement goal has been achieved for the 2020 fishing season and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is reopening the Deshka River to a limited harvest opportunity for the remainder of the king salmon season. Effective 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 8 through 11:00 p.m. Monday, July 13, 2020, the methods and means has been restored and anglers may keep one king salmon, 20 inches or greater in length, in the Deshka River. The annual limit is restricted to two king salmon, 20 inches or greater in length, and the area open to king salmon harvest is limited to downstream of the weir only and within a half-mile radius of the mouth. Bait and multiple hooks may be used downstream of the weir per regulation. Waters upstream of the weir to regulatory markers located near Chijuk Creek (river mile 17), remain catch-and-release only for king salmon with only one unbaited, single hook, artificial lure allowed.

Anglers are reminded that all other restrictions and closures taken in Emergency Order 2-KS-2-8-20 remain in effect, except for the Deshka River. Unit 2 of the Susitna River is closed to fishing for king salmon and fishing for king salmon in Units 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of the Susitna River drainages are restricted to catch-and-release (except for the Deshka River). Sport fishing gear is restricted to one unbaited, single-hook, artificial lure in all waters of the Susitna River drainage. Please review the Emergency Order in its entirety.

The biological escapement goal (BEG) for king salmon in the Deshka River is 9,000 to 18,000 fish, as measured at the weir located at river mile 7. The escapement goal has been achieved with approximately 10,200 fish passed the weir to date and a projection of 11,200. Therefore, it is warranted to open the Deshka River king salmon fishery to harvest. The estimated harvest of less than 300 fish due to this action will not lower the final escapement below the lower end of the escapement goal.

“The 2020 run appears to be performing better than runs experienced in 2017 through 2019,” stated Area Management Biologist Sam Ivey. “With the escapement goal now achieved and continued favorable counts in recent days, there is an opportunity for some late season harvest.”

For additional information, please contact Area Management Biologist Sam Ivey at (907) 746-6300 or Cook Inlet Management Coordinator Matt Miller at (907) 267-2415.

What a week on the creek. We are starting to see the chrome roll in.

This past weeks Fish of the Week was a mystery weight fish. The winner is decided by who weighs a fish that is closest to the mystery weight without going over the mystery weight.

The mystery weight was 18.37lbs. It was actually written on a shelf in the shack.

A big congratulations goes out to Dustin K. who brought up this nice chrome buc that tipped the scales at 18.36lbs. Talk about hitting nail on the head. Swing into the Shack to claim your prize pack.

Remember all that you have to do for Fish of the Week is 1. Land a Ship Creek King 2. Bring it up to the shack to get weighed (if we’re closed take a pic on the scale and send it to us) 3. Collect your prizes if you are the Fish of the Week. Fish On!

Very fun day fishing with Eric yesterday. We finally figured out how to get the fish to bite when they have others things on their mind. We even had a giant laker come in and open his mouth with gills flared out and smoke our lure. At 10 feet away from the boat. Unfortunately the lure wasn’t set good and popped out. Trophy size in the 36-40” range. Next time big guy! Book a trip and experience how addicting laker fishing can be! 503-706-8205.

Who needs to fish anywhere else?! What a beauty this fish was. I was reeling up to go in when it hit. Nice net job Kendra Christine Waldenberg!

Another great day on the water! These two boys are hooked for life after catching 2 really nice lake trout. We lost a couple bigger fish close to the boat also. The Point Lodge KODIAK CUSTOM FISHING TACKLE
