Alaska fishing gear built for adventure, and this month’s Gear Bag has everything you need to make your next trip a success! From sturdy boots to keep your feet dry to reliable knives for quick and easy fish cleaning and more, these essentials are handpicked for Alaskan waters.
Silver Horde 6-inch Gold Star Stubby Dodger
Silver Horde’s 6-inch Gold Star Stubby Dodger is available in a selection of fish-catching color patterns, including UV Chrome Herring Aide. This smaller dodger has a snappy, dodging action and will rotate at faster speeds. The dodger’s motion produces a gentle drag on the line, so it presents well when used with other gear. Try one with bait or your favorite lure.
Spyderco Stretch 2 XL Lightweight Salt
The Stretch 2 XL Lightweight represents more than 3 decades of evolution that began with Spyderco’s classic folding hunting knives. Through years of relentless refinement, they have arrived at a full-sized, full-service cutting tool that is incredibly lightweight and easy to carry. So, what could possibly make it better? How about crafting it with a corrosion-resistant blade steel and making it a member of their elite Salt Series. Tipping the scales at a mere 3 ounces, the Stretch 2 XL Lightweight Salt is the largest folding knife in their Salt lineup. Its 3.95” blade is hollow-ground from ultra-corrosion-resistant H-2 steel and available in a choice of PlainEdge or fully serrated SpyderEdge formats. The blade is supported by a sturdy back-lock mechanism housed in a lightweight fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) handle. Injection molded in a bright-yellow color for high visibility, the handle features a nonslip Bi-Directional Texture pattern for optimal grip security and a fully configurable 4-position pocket clip that supports all possible carry options.
Promar ProFloat Landing Net
This handy landing net comes in three handles sizes—7.5”, 18” and 30”—and two hoop sizes: 13.5” x 18.5” and 18.5” x 20.5”. This gives you lots of choices depending on how you fish and what you fish for. We like this net from our float tubes and have used both the 7.5” and 18” models with the larger basket when fishing for large rainbows. It’s very handy that it floats.
Donnmar Checkpoint 880 Titanium Fishing Plier
Made of titanium right here in the USA, these pliers will never corrode, rust, or oxidize. This is a plier that will last your lifetime. We found these pliers to be strong, lighter than stainless pliers, and the cutters capable of cutting mono and fluorocarbon up to 450-pound-test, super lines, and even wire line up to 180-pound-test. Blades are replaceable. Nonslip Santoprene rubber grips molded into the handles. Limited lifetime warranty. These are outstanding pliers. They’re not cheap, and we strongly recommend buying the optional leather holster and coiled tether to help keep you from accidentally dropping them overboard.
XTRATUF Legacy Altitude Low
The Legacy Altitude Low is an all-terrain version of the classic XTRATUF Legacy boot. Built on a new outsole with multi-traction lugs designed for all-terrain adventures while still maintaining SRA slip resistance when you find yourself back on wet, slippery decks. The outsole lugs are specifically designed to flex and shed debris as you move. 100% waterproof and constructed with their signature triple-dipping technique, which creates a seamless, flexible barrier that is highly resistant to many organic and inorganic acids, chemicals, and contaminants.
Minus33 Mountain Heritage Midweight Boot Socks
Minus33 makes high-quality merino wool clothing. We use and endorse many of their garments. Over this last year, we’ve worn their Mountain Heritage Midweight Boot Socks on many different hikes and hunts and are very impressed. Furthermore, they partnered with us to create a “No Pebble Mine” sock with the Fish Alaska logo, and you can get yourself a pair when you subscribe to Fish Alaska for 3 years.
