The Inside Passage (Southeast Alaska)
Southeast Alaska is comprised of a handful of islands most widely known as the Inside Passage. It’s a sought after cruise ship and touring destination for tens of thousands of people each year, but it’s also a resource-rich area for independent land travelers, many who are seeking to fish. With popular seaside communities like Sitka, Yakutat, Prince of Wales Island, Ketchikan, Juneau, Gustavus, Haines, Skagway and Wrangell. Each of these communities has good saltwater fishing at its fingertips or at least within boating distance. Some areas are a bit more famous than others, and for good reason.
Alaska Airlines offers a daily Milk Run throughout Southeast, Alaska. One of their Milk Run routes departs from Seattle and stops in Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg and Juneau before landing in Anchorage. Another originates in Anchorage then stops in Cordova, Yakutat and Juneau before its final destination of Seattle. From there you can jump off to the smaller towns and communities to fish remote coves and water that sees just a minimal number of people each year. You may also opt to travel on the Alaska Marine Highway System by ferry from Seattle.
Mount Saint Elias, between Yakutat and Cordova, is the second-highest summit in the United States and the Crown Jewel of this region.
Fantastic saltwater fishing for halibut, a variety of rockfish, lingcod, salmon, steelhead and cutthroat trout is found in Southeast Alaska. There are plenty of fully guided adventures to be had in this region as well as some excellent self guided options.
