Marcus WeinerAbout Marcus Weiner

Marcus Weiner is Founder and Publisher of Fish Alaska and Hunt Alaska magazines, along with his business partner and sister, Melissa Norris. For the last 50 years, Marcus has been an avid angler for anything that swims. Marcus fishes extensively in the fresh- and saltwater of Alaska, in the Pacific Northwest, and makes regular trips abroad to fish. Over the last 30 years, Marcus has logged thousands of hours fishing Alaska waters and has travelled to a great number of destinations. His passion for rainbow trout and salmon fishing, and love of eating saltwater bottomfish, have enabled him to fish in lakes, rivers both large and small, protected saltwater and the open ocean.

Marcus manages the editorial department, and takes the lead on the Gear Review issue. He is an addicted gear head, and continues to investigate and test new products and fishing techniques. Marcus has had the great pleasure of fishing many different types of techniques in Alaska including trolling, back trolling, back bouncing, side drifting, free drifting, drift fishing, vertical jigging, casting and retrieving, boon dogging, bobber dogging, nymphing, stripping, swinging and plunking. He is equally at home throwing flies to rainbows, free drifting jigs to Alaska’s five species of Pacific salmon, or yo-yoing iron in the briny blue to Alaska’s big three bottomfish species: halibut, lingcod and rockfish. Marcus is responsible for the Alaska Traveler, Online, Gear Bag and Recipe departments within Fish Alaska. He writes multiple feature articles per year.

Over the last several years, Marcus has developed a video series called “The Jig Life.” It’s located on the Fish Alaska Youtube channel and showcases Marcus and the crew catching a variety of fish on jigs. You can see halibut, lingcod, rockfish, steelhead and salmon all being landed on jigs—and in both fresh- and saltwater. Over the last 24 years, Marcus has appeared on various television shows, including: North to Alaska, Hawg Quest, Angler West TV, and Exploring Alaska show.

Marcus derives deep satisfaction in sourcing his own food. Each year he fills his freezers with salmon, halibut, lingcod, rockfish, razor clams and Dungeness crab. He is also an avid hunter, so deer and moose are usually in there too. He plants a large garden, and tends a fruit orchard, so his family of six derives a lot of their food from these efforts. Marcus embraces and appreciates the field to table mentality and spends many hours in the kitchen turning these healthy and delicious foods into scrumptious meals.
