Trout Traveler: A New Series Dedicated to Alaska Trout Fishing

In this brand-new series, Fish Alaska magazine publisher Marcus Weiner targets all species of Alaska trout using many different techniques. Rainbow, steelhead, cutthroat, and lake trout, with appearances of other species like Dolly Varden, Arctic char, Arctic grayling and all 5 species of Pacific salmon found in Alaska.

Episode One: Chasing Steelhead at Yakutat Lodge

Episode 1 of our new series kicks off on the legendary Situk River, filmed at one of our favorite places in Alaska: Yakutat Lodge. We’ve been fishing the Situk with Yakutat Lodge for decades, and there is no better place in the state to target trophy steelhead. The Situk holds vibrant, healthy, and varied trout species, but it’s the steelhead that draw serious anglers from all over. This is a revered catch-and-release fishery, and for a lifelong trout bum like Marcus, it is the ultimate challenge. In this episode, we explore what makes the Situk so special, share fishing stories, offer gear tips, and go after one of the most exciting fish Alaska has to offer.

Alaska trout fishing doesn’t get much better than this. The Situk River is a prime example of why anglers travel from across the globe to fish these waters. With a mix of rainbow trout, cutthroat, and steelhead, the diversity here is unmatched. Whether you’re swinging flies or drifting beads, the action is steady and the setting is pure Alaska. This episode gives a firsthand look at how special Alaska trout fishing can be, especially when shared with longtime friends and a lodge that feels like home.
