Best Fishing Rods
Batson JDGTW710M-2CG Twitching Rod Blank
Publisher Marcus Weiner built out this blank as a spinning rod. It’s one sweet stick. Light in the hand, responsive, with a fast tip and plenty of muscle in the lower end, Marcus used this rod to twitch up a range of salmon species on the Togiak in 2025. Batson supplied the components for the build, and the Winn split grip is good looking, reduces the weight of the rod and increases sensitivity. Batson built this blank specifically for anglers who travel to twitch for salmon and Marcus says they hit it out of the park. Editor George Krumm concurs with Marcus’s evaluation. George built his as a baitcasting stick, with a split grip and simple-spiral-wrapped.
Lamiglas SI series SI106MHC-SPW-L
This is a 10’6” medium-heavy, spiral-wrapped casting rod rated for 10- to 20-pound-test line. Editor George Krumm is a big fan of spiral-wrapped rods. This series uses Lamiglas’s top-of-the-line SI blanks. George used this rod for bobber fishing for kings in big water. The medium version of this rod would make a great bobber rod or bobberdogging rod for steelhead and salmon. These rods are made in the USA with a limited lifetime warranty.
Lamiglas Bluewater BW5850C
Publisher Marcus Weiner says, “This rod is a nice combination of finesse and power. It’s got a soft tip that allows fish to slurp on baits, but plenty of backbone to muscle big halibut, lingcod, and the occasional skate to the surface, or to work jigs in several hundred feet of water. It feels good in the hand and is relatively light compared to other sticks in this weight class.” With a line rating of 80- to 200-pound-test, this 5’8”, mod/fast, heavy rod is rated for 1- to 6-ounce jigs. Marcus had no problem vertical jigging with lures up to 8 ounces with this rod.
Shimano Technium 90 M 2PC SPN B
This 2-piece, 9-foot spinning rod is built on a medium-power, fast-action blank. It’s light in the hand and responsive. We like that it’s a 2-piece stick, which enables us to travel with it. One-piece rods, especially long ones, are simply impractical when you are taking a plane ride either to, or within, Alaska. The rod is rated for 8- to 12-pound-test, and lures from 3/8- to 3/4 ounce. We twitched for pinks, chums, and coho with it. The rod has a cork handle and Fuji O guides. Fit and finish are good. There are 4 rods in the Technium rod collection, and all would have an application in Alaska fisheries.
G.Loomis IMX-PRO Steelhead Bead Spinning STBR1201S
This 10’, medium-light power, moderate-fast-action spinning rod is rated for 8- to 12-pound-test mono, and weights from 3/8- to 3/4 ounce. This is a really nice bobberdogging rod that can also fish as a bobber-jig rod. Premium cork handle, Fuji reel seat, and Fuji Alconite guides provide reliable quality. If you’re looking for a bobberdogging rod for steelhead and salmon, this is a great choice. Made in the USA.
Lamiglas Infinity Series ISS 710MHC
The Infinity Series are top-tier, USA-made salmon- and steelhead rods. This Infinity Series casting rod is 7’10” long and rated for 12- to 25-pound-test. It’s designed for hover fishing and backbouncing and in that capacity, can handle 1- to 6 ounces of weight. It is a fast-action, medium-heavy salmon rod. It has Fuji titanium guides (double-foot in the butt section; single-foot guides towards the tip) and a Fuji graphite double-locking reel seat with a trigger. We used this rod for hover fishing for Chinook and landed several fish with it. Comes with a limited lifetime warranty.
Okuma X-Troll Salmon Trolling Rod, 9’5”, XT-C-952-H
This is a great rod for the popular 360-flasher technique—that is what it was designed for. We used this rod to troll heavy leads (8- to 16 ounces) with Pro-Troll ProChip 11 flashers trailing spinners or stuffer baits. We landed several Chinook while trolling with this rod. It also makes a great downrigger rod, and pretty good heavy mooching rod. Blanks are 24-ton carbon fiber with Ultimate X Reinforced Multi-Directional Fiber Technology to provide unparalleled lifting power for the net shot. Sea Guide reel seat and guides. The X-Troll series is comprised of 5 rods ranging in length from 9’ to 9’10”, with actions of medium heavy, heavy, and extra heavy. The rod we used was 9’5”, extra-heavy action.
