In Episode 8 of the Jig Life, Marcus and the crew visit Togiak River Lodge where they have perfected the technique of jigging for sockeye salmon. In most places people floss for sockeye, a technique where you line a fly into their mouth to legally hook them. Some say it’s not the most sporting, others love it. Either way sockeye salmon are the species of most abundance for harvest in Alaska, so as long as you follow the rules fish for sockeye however you can. If you’re looking for an extremely fun and sporting method then jigging might be for you.

Togiak River Lodge and our Publisher Marcus Weiner have teamed up to expose their success when it comes to jigging for sockeye and getting them to strike. The Togiak River is the perfect setting to try this as a main stem in Alaska’s Bristol Bay watershed, where the most sockeye salmon are known to return annually in all of the world. The Togiak River is home to all five species of Pacific salmon, plus rainbow and dollies. The lodge is about as remote as it gets but with the comforts of a warm, dry cabin and indoor plumbing. Little pressure on the river in the scheme of things makes this place a must visit, especially now if you’re itching to try free drifting for sockeye. Watch this long version video for our ground breaking and exciting sockeye on jigs footage.
