The Vanilla Gorilla started the last few mornings the right way. Took out a great group of women yesterday and today for the Women’s Kenai River Classic. Had a rough first day landing silvers, but made up for it today with some really nice toads. Big Dan’s Fishing Charter
Great way to end an Alaska dream vacation for one group. They really loaded up their vacation with a combo trip, then an overnight, and today ended with another combo trip with Jesse. And in between slayed the fish on the Kenai from the lodge. Talk about a load of fish they’re taking home to their families. Dan took his group out for a long range multispecies trip. Had to take some extra time to get on the bite, but the effort paid off! We also ran out of freezer space at the lodge, so Sarah had to take 16- 50 lb boxes to the airport freezer just to get space for what was coming back today. Tomorrow another 20 boxes will be heading out of the lodge as another group comes to start their vacation. Happy clients all around!

This weather lately has really put a wrench in the way we like to do things. Big seas, winds, and tides make it hard for us to get where we need to go. We were still able to get on some fish, but really wished it was a better outcome. At one point it flattened out and we were able to enjoy some beautiful views. Big Dan’s Fishing Charter
The weather came in and interrupted our planned overnight trip. We had some very awesome clients who understood and rolled with the plan. We fished the first day as hard as we could, but had to come back into the harbor because it was just too rough. Most of them had hotel rooms already, so it wasn’t an issue for them to have a place to sleep last night. 2 of them were loving the idea of sleeping on the boat so we let them camp out overnight in the Game Changer in the harbor. Everyone got up early and headed back out again today. Without the understanding and positivity of our clients we would have never been able to make this happen. We appreciate having guests that just roll with it and make the best out of the situation. It paid off big time for a couple of them who ended up with a halibut catch of a lifetime. Captain, crew, and guests were thrilled to see what was coming out of the water. It just shows you that sometimes things may not happen how you want, but keeping an open mind and rolling with things can really pay off! Thank you to this wonderful group for being so positive!

Mother nature has not been on our side again for the last week. It’s been hit and miss with big seas, high winds, and cruddy water. We’ve said it before, having to cancel trips is the worst! We know our clients come to Alaska to have the trip of a lifetime. When we can’t do our part to make that experience happen, we take it personal. If you happen to be one of the lucky ones to have great weather, you know how great the catch can be. For those of you who are getting the short end of the stick, all you can do is come back and give it another go! Let’s hope the weather changes and we get another break this next week. We are ready for some sunshine and better fishing! One nice thing about staying at Big Dan’s Lodge is when the weather doesn’t cooperate you can always come back and try your luck on the river.

Today’s catch was off the hook again! Game Changer crew came back with a great load from their overnight trip. Rough weather made it a little hard to get on rockfish, but the yelloweye bite was hot. Good size halibut and some real nice lingcod. Blackjack crew had to stick with a halibut only trip with the snotty weather rolling in the bay. Happy clients with a great catch. When mother nature decides to show her ugly side, we have to roll with the punches. Unfortunately we had to cancel our overnight trip that was planned for today and tomorrow. We HATE having to cancel but safety of our clients is much more important than catching fish. We appreciate those who understand and know that we will do anything we can to make up for it. We were still able to take our other group out for a quick run for halibut before the winds and waves picked up. Good thing the bite was fast. They even got to enjoy the whales putting on a show. Captain Nate was able to get our lodge guests out on the Kenai River as well and got a nice king on the boat! Tomorrow’s weather is looking better on the saltwater and will allow us to take a group out for halibut only, so if you’re interested in a a trip give me a call. We have 6 seats open.

Each one of our trips is different and you always wonder if you can out do your top trip. Well, this overnight was one of those amazing trips where we may have outdone ourselves again! Part of this group was returning clients who are now more like family, new guys who really know how to make their Alaska trip one for the books with a 204 lb catch, and a couple solo travelers who just wanted an adventure and got just that!
